NFL Pick’em Strategy
Good NFL pick’em strategy is not about predicting upsets. It is about not losing points you did not need to lose, and about picking differently from the crowd only when the math says so. Favorites win about two thirds of NFL games, the public overreacts to last week, and most pools are decided by a handful of games all season. Here is a practical strategy for straight-up, confidence and against-the-spread pools, plus what to do when you are leading or chasing.
The one rule for every format
Know the lock rule and never miss a pick. A blank game is a guaranteed zero; a bad pick is only a probable zero. Set a Thursday reminder, or use a pool that emails you when picks are missing. In a season of 270 games, the two or three you forget are usually the difference between second and fifth.
Straight-up pick’em strategy
- Take the favorites. Picking every favorite gets you around 65 percent for the season. That is the baseline everyone should beat, and most people do not.
- Upsets only where you disagree with the number. If the spread is 2.5 or less, the game is close to a coin flip and either pick is defensible. Save your contrarian picks for those games.
- Home teams in close games. When the spread is within a field goal, lean home. Home field is worth roughly two points.
- Watch the quarterback news. A backup quarterback moves a game more than any other injury. Check Saturday night before Sunday games lock.
- Do not fade your own team out of spite. Pick them like any other team, by the number.
Confidence pool strategy
- Top three numbers on the three biggest favorites. Those picks are a third of a perfect week. Protect them.
- Coin flips get 1 to 4. A miss at 2 costs 2. A miss at 12 costs the week.
- Upsets at low numbers. If you love an underdog, take it at 3. You keep the upside and cap the damage.
- Do not over-rank primetime. Sunday and Monday night games are not safer because they are on TV. Rank by spread, not by broadcast.
- Re-rank after Thursday. With per-game locking, Thursday’s result can change which open games deserve the high numbers.

Against-the-spread strategy
- Respect 3 and 7. More NFL games are decided by exactly 3 or 7 points than any other margin. Underdogs at +3.5 and favorites at -2.5 are better than the same teams at +2.5 and -3.5.
- Home underdogs of 3 to 7. They cover more often than the public expects.
- Fade big line moves after blowouts. A team that won by 30 gets a spread next week that assumes it will happen again. It usually does not.
- Ignore who wins. The question is only whether the margin beats the number.
- Aim for 55 percent. Over a season that wins most pools. Anyone promising 65 percent against the spread is selling something.

Use the crowd
Most online pools show the percentage of players on each team. That number is a weapon in both directions.
- Leading? Pick with the crowd on the big favorites. If the favorite loses, everyone loses with you and your lead holds.
- Chasing? Find one or two games where 70 percent of the pool is on one side and you honestly like the other. Take the other. If you are right you pass most of the field in one game; if you are wrong you were behind anyway.
- Middle of the pack? Play straight. Take the best pick in every game and let the leaders make the mistakes.
Where the season is actually won
- Weeks 1 to 3. Nobody knows anything yet. Take favorites and home teams and avoid clever picks.
- Weeks 4 to 12. Enough games to trust records. This is where handicapping pays off.
- Bye weeks. Fewer games means each pick is worth more. See the 2026 bye weeks.
- Weeks 15 to 18. Playoff teams rest starters and eliminated teams play loose. Check who has something to play for before locking a favorite.
Tools that help
The weekly games pages show every spread, moneyline and total in one place so you can sort the favorites in seconds. If you run or join a pool here, the pick form shows the spread and the percentage picked on each card and you can autofill favorites in one tap, then change the games you disagree with. Start a free pool or join the public pool to practice.
NFL pick’em strategy questions
How many games should I pick as upsets?
In straight-up pools, two or three a week at most, and only in games with a spread of three or less.
Is it better to pick all favorites?
It is the best simple strategy, and it beats most players. To win the pool you need a few smart deviations, not many.
What percentage wins a pick’em pool?
Around 68 to 70 percent straight up over a season usually wins a group of 20 or more. Against the spread, 55 percent is excellent.
Should I copy expert picks?
Expert consensus is roughly as good as the spread. Use it as one input, not as your sheet.
Does weather matter?
For totals more than for winners. Wind above 20 mph hurts passing teams and favors the underdog in close games.
How do I catch up if I am far behind?
Go against the crowd in a few high-disagreement games each week. You cannot catch up picking the same teams as the leader.
